DISCOVER MORE ABOUT ROWAN COUNTY
ROCO is a place that’s “kinda country … kinda cool” … but always original; thus, the folks in Rowan County work and play hard to be “Be an Original.” It’s the county’s slogan, and you’ll see it everywhere, in towns all over the county.
Nothing says originally better than Cherry Treesort, a treehouse get-away on a 26-acre farm in southern Rowan, where guests enjoy the unique experience of staying in one of five well-appointed treehouses. Or perhaps, Cheerwine, the cherry flavored soft drink that originated in Salisbury and is like no other. The Cheerwine Festival draws thousands to Salisbury each year.
From eclectic restaurants to breweries to wineries to a Barn Quilt Trail, Rowan works hard to live up to its reputation of originality. Golf courses spread their green carpets all around the county, and the county shares High Rock Lake, the second largest man-made lake in the state, with Davidson County. Water sports and lakeside living abound.
The county is home to four colleges, spreading educational opportunities and culture, as well as three community theaters, the Salisbury Symphony, the Waterworks Visual Arts Center, and others. Dan Nicholas Park is one the most visited county parks in the state, and the Bell Tower Green Park is also uniquely original. It’s centered in downtown Salisbury, spreading greenery and spilling water in a carefully designed venue in an otherwise busy, concrete world.
The Village of Gold Hill has re-invented itself into a picturesque, fun historic site, while the Town of Kannapolis has re-invented itself into research and development. In Kannapolis, a town of two counties – Cabarrus and Rowan — you’ll find upscale living, open air dining, walking, running, a putt-putt lawn, classes for exercise, fountains, public art, the area’s Minor League baseball team, and Old Armor Beer Co. All this, and adjacent is the North Carolina Research Campus, a 350-acre scientific community that works collaboratively with eight universities, entrepreneurs, and the David H. Murdock Research Institute to empower human health through nutrition, healthier foods, and precision nutrition.
